It IS all about the bike

I fired it up last week on the bike and hit a new PR for volume:

273 km

On May 6th I participated in the Breaking Away Bearspaw ITT/TTT/Crit race hosted by the friendly Crankmaster's Cycling Club.

The first stage was the ITT; riders starting in 30 sec intervals. This was a 1 x 6km (approx) lap and saw riders tackle a few climbs and a nasty NW headwind.

From the ITT results, the organizers put together the teams for the TTT.

Here's a shot of Team "C" (Myself (Speed Theory) Rod (Cranky's) and Darcy (Cranky's) crossing the finish line together.

After the TTT stage we did the Road Race. Here competitors were divided up into "heats" of 6 riders each. I was in the last heat, consisting of the 6 fastest ITT times.

Yikes!! I knew I should have sandbagged my ITT time! ;)

Chilling before our heat.

I've never participated in an event quite like this. Part crit, part road race. It was a blast!

We started out the first 1.5 km at a pretty mellow pace.. I think riders were just feeling one and other out as most of us had never ridden together. I was in 3rd spot when we hit the first hill and when the pace slowed even more just as we started to climb.. that's when I decided to attack.

Quick shift down and stood up and hammered up the hill... god my legs were hurting but no one gave chase and by the half way mark I had about 10-15 sec on the group. I didn't look back and rode as fast and hard as I could!

I hammered the remaining few Km's and held on and crossed the finish line first!

What a fun experience. I learned a lot about riding in a pace line, handling corners at high speeds and some tactics of road racing. I am looking forward to the next race this season!

Results:
ITT: 3rd
TTT: 2nd
Road Race: Crossed the line first but I guess since it was an Australian Pursuit, with the handicap I placed 2nd.

In the end results don't matter. I met some really cool people and spent the day outside.

It IS all about the bike.
